Compact between African states and mining companies supports Africa Mining Vision

In recognition of the vital role private mining companies can play in Africa’s transformational journey, the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) have announced the Africa Mining Vision Compact with private sector leaders. The Compact was launched this week during the annual Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town.

The Compact outlines key commitments that both mining companies and host states will undertake to support the realisation of the Africa Mining Vision (AMV). The principles of the AMV Compact are centred around good governance, building human and institutional capacity, fostering a transparent and accountable minerals sector, and developing a diversified and globally competitive African mineral industry.

Speaking about the Compact, Director of the Special Initiatives Division at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) Ms Fatima Denton said, “This Compact represents a mutal acknowledgement between states and mining companies that the transformation intended by the Africa Mining Vision requires the involvement of all players in the sector. We believe it is an important – and exciting – step towards even greater collaboration and coordination between African governments and private industry in achieving development.”
