Komatsu earns world's top score in performance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Posted on 15 Nov 2013

Komatsu (President and CEO: Tetsuji Ohashi) has been chosen as one of the most advanced companies in the world in reducing greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions. In its Global 500 Climate Change Report 2013, CDP*, known to enjoy the trust of investors from around the world for its evaluation of private-sector companies’ engagement in global climate change, ranks Komatsu’s performance of reducing ghg emissions in the manufacturing and supply chain processes as a leading company in the world. CDP analyses and evaluates corporate efforts and performance of the world’s largest 500 companies (market capitalisation) to tackle global climate change.

Specifically, CDP evaluates corporate information disclosures in the scale of 100 points, and corporate performance in the five grades of A, B, C, D and E.

Komatsu received 95 points in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index and A in the Climate Performance Leadership Index. It was the only Japanese company which was ranked “A” in the Industrial sector.

Komatsu recognises environmental efforts as one of its highest priority tasks, as it fulfils corporate social responsibilities and ensures sustainable growth.

Based on this commitment, Komatsu is aggressively making efforts to reduce its environmental impact, including the reduction of ghg emissions, in all aspects of its corporate activities.

Products and services which contribute to reduced environmental impact, such as the reduction of ghg emissions, include Komatsu’s innovative Hybrid excavators, which reduce fuel consumption by up to 40%, and its Autonomous Haulage Systems, which optimise machine performance, lowering fuel and consumables usage.

 * Started by an independent NPO of the UK in 2003, CDP is the world’s largest program being used to evaluate corporate engagement in global climate change. Today, CDP is supported by 722 institutional investors representing $87 trillion in assets.

Every year, the CDP organisation distributes standardised survey questions concerning climate change to the world’s large-listed companies and collects their responses for assessment.

As a renowned technological innovator, Komatsu’s focus is on improving safety, productivity and reducing its impact on the environment. Each year, Komatsu invests more than $620 million in R&D activities, with a number of advanced technologies already deployed in the global marketplace.

The groundbreaking Hybrid Excavator was introduced in 2008. The world’s first commercially viable hybrid earthmoving machine, the Komatsu Hybrid Excavator can reduce fuel consumption by 25%, and harmful CO2 exhaust emissions by 41% when compared with a conventional machine.

As the next major development in earthmoving, hybrid machine technology is set to be rolled out across the industry.

Komatsu’s electric-drive mining trucks have been an industry favourite for more than 20 years, proving long service life and efficient operation. Komatsu is part of a joint venture in Indonesia working towards fuelling mining dump trucks with biofuel, estimating that phasing in 1,000 of such vehicles could reduce up to 200,000 t of CO2 emissions each year.

More recently Komatsu became the first manufacturer in the world to commercialise a groundbreaking Autonomous Haulage System (AHS), where unmanned ultra-class dump trucks are remotely operated to improve mine safety and efficiency.

Komatsu’s sophisticated KOMTRAX remote satellite monitoring system (which provides detailed machine-operational data directly to your computer from anywhere in the world) ties in with partners Modular Mining (offering solution-based mining software that resolves common operational issues) and Topcon (Providers of 3-D based positioning systems).
