Moving open-pit equipment efficiently

An innovator in surface mining, Specialised Trailers and Parts is a niche provider of heavy duty transport solutions with many clients in mining. Several years of industry experience has allowed the company to team up with a handful of niche, top quality local manufacturers. Among these is Engineering Top Tech based in Richard’s Bay, South Africa, specialising in off-road mining trailers and other yellow metal ancillaries.

Specialised Trailers’ John Harding says that “for more than 20 years ETT has innovated and hungrily sought out new product ideas. It is this DNA that has lead it to develop and add the Compact Tilting Bed lowbed to its already extensive lowboy trailer range. Capacities range from 40 to 120 t subject to hauler GCM limitations.”

An articulated dump truck serves as the prime mover, thereby significantly increasing manoeuvrability, efficiency and the ability to deliver and recover machinery from various locations on mine site.

Operation is via a hydraulic neck and series of pivot points which tilt the deck to the ground for loading and off-loading providing a loading angle of approximately 12o. Uses typically include the transport of dozers, drill rigs, excavators and broken-down machinery.

The loading and off-loading of machinery is painless, safe and achieved in a matter of minutes. Active, fail to safe hub braking with wheel stations paired to the prime mover means that there is no safety expense in lieu of convenience.

Furthermore, strain gauge telemetry and CAN bus interface between hauler and trailer means that full data reporting on a range of factors such as speed, load mass, load cycles, time in use, braking force/cycles and other data points that the client may wish to monitor and record is available.

Special units are also made according to customer specifications.
