Doe Run says its management processes help pave way for sustainable future. Efficiently managing company projects can significantly improve an organization’s bottom line. Its project management office (PMO) was recently recognized among the world’s best when it was named first runner-up for the 2010 PMO of the Year. The annual award is presented by PM Solutions and the Project Management Institute’s Program Management Office Specific Interest Group.
“By exploring new and innovative ways to manage our business, Doe Run was able to weather the economic downturn and make significant strides in making the company stronger and more sustainable,” said Bruce Neil, Doe Run President and CEO. “We are honoured that, in just three years, our project management program ranks with those of leading global companies.”
For the 2010 PMO of the Year, Doe Run competed against more than 40 applicants from around the world, including state and federal agencies, major NGOs and Fortune 1,000 companies. The award distinguishes a company for its success in developing and maturing a program that supports the effective management of projects. Doe Run finished second to IBM’s Center of Excellence; other finalists included Auckland City Council’s Program Office, in Auckland, New Zealand, and T-Mobile USA’s Enterprise Program Office in Bellevue, Washington.
In 2006, Doe Run introduced an enterprise-wide project management program that prioritises and manages the entire company’s portfolio of projects, including construction, engineering, corporate and IT endeavors. The PMO manages approximately 40 projects at any point in time, ranging in size from $10,000 to $150 million. At the end of 2009, 95% of Doe Run’s initiatives achieved business objectives, thanks to its project management structure devoted to the successful management of company projects.
