MineSight providing solutions for coal mining

Coal mines face unprecedented challenges. Stringent legislation governing production and emissions means companies demand unique software solutions. Minesight says these companies are increasingly turning to its solutions “because MineSight software meets those needs. MineSight offers coal-specific modelling features and selective mining options for reporting. It can handle both metallurgical and thermal coal deposits, and can report and model multiple coal types within each of these deposits.

“For block models, MineSight is the only software package that can model unlimited seams in one project. With greater spatial precision, Sub-Blocking enhances MineSight’s underground solution and makes modelling even the narrowest coal seams both quick and simple. And MineSight is the only software package with fully integrated haulage with multiple equipment allocation.”

The software supports multiple types of block models – multiple ore percent for unequalled accuracy in complex geology, gridded seam models for stratiform deposits, and sub-blocked models for spatial precision.

“MineSight’s got a very long history in the coal business, and one of the primary drivers of the Teck Coal usage has been the development over the last 25 years of the geological modelling component,” explains Eric Jensen, Director of Engineering for Canadian coal producer, Teck. “No other packages can touch MineSight. Basically it’s the only package out there that will model to the accuracy that we need. It’s the only package out there that will address all the issues around complex coal.”

Teck is among numerous companies using MineSight, which supports coal mines on five continents. Other users include Grande Cache Coal (Canada), Walter Energy (Canada), Minera Aratiri (Uruguay), Banpu Public Co (Thailand), Italian-Thai Development PC (Thailand), Vale (Brazil), Phonesack Group (Laos), Anglo American (Canada and Australia), Coalspur Mines (Canada), TransAlta  (Canada), Centennial Coal (Australia), Lee Ranch Coal (USA) and EGAT (Thailand).

The numerous advantages for mining coal, particularly structurally complex coal include MineSight Reserve, which unifies the consolidated power of the software’s reserve engines, provides complex coal functionality and comprehensive reporting logic. Recent improvements to the Implicit Modeler offer true thickness calculations with surface outputs, plus user-input controlling features. There’s new multiple 1% support in MineSight Data Analyst as well as enhancements in MineSight Torque that improve complex coal modelling.

Schedule Optimizer is equipped with new features, such as multiple equipment sets by material for handling different waste types and coal seams.

MineSight is a Hexagon company founded in 1970, by Fred Banfield who is to be inducted into the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame in February. MineSight software is a comprehensive modelling and mine planning platform, offering integrated solutions for exploration, modelling, design, scheduling and operation.
