MTS Sensors T-Series linear position sensors for hazardous environments

MTS Sensors, a division of MTS Systems Corporation, has launched the new T-Series of magnetostrictive linear position sensors. These high resolution devices, which are based on the company’s proprietary Temposonics technology, are optimised for use in hazardous working environments, where they might be exposed to flames, caustic substances and potentially explosive atmospheres. They are the first linear positioning sensors in the industry to meet safety integrity level (SIL) 2 standards. In addition, they are fully compliant with ATEX and IECEx Zone 0/1, Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 and Zone 22 safety certifications covering the protection types “flameproof” and “increased safety.”

T-Series devices are supplied in an all stainless steel design. Alternatively a highly corrosion-resistant stainless steel version is available. These devices can withstand shocks of up to 100 G, vibrational force of up to 15 G (for frequencies from 20 Hz to 2000 Hz). When operating at 60°C, their mean time to failure (MTTF) figure is 100 years and have an extensive operational temperature range covering -40°C to +85°C in certain models and can cope with pressures of 350 bar static. Protection from liquid ingress is assured thanks to these devices’ IP66, IP67, IP68, IP69K and NEMA 4X compliance. They also offer a high degree of immunity to electromagnetic radiation, in accordance with IEC/EN 61326-2-3 (Class B).

The patented Temposonics technology developed by MTS provides an extremely accurate non-contact method for measuring position which is highly suited to use in the most demanding of modern industrial applications. The sensors based on this technology are thus highly resilient to vibrations, shock, extreme pressures. Since these sensors are not reliant on moving parts, they have prolonged operationally lifespans, with little or no maintenance required. Furthermore, they can be mounted within even the most space constrained settings. “The T-Series delivers a combination of performance and reliability not previously available to a broad cross section of industries sectors,” explains John Emholz, Senior Vice President and General Manager, MTS Sensors. “This series is the only one to currently offer SIL 2 capability, giving the user added value for their application, while still being cost effective.”
