A number of ridiculous NGOs, not least Alburnus Maior have, ignoring science and best practice in environmental remediation, been fighting Gabriel Resources’ plans to clean up old, very environmentally unsound mine workings in the Rosia Montana and develop a modern, clean gold mine. Sadly, now their idiotic campaign is going to lose many sorely needed jobs, lose some people their homes and bring a stop to important archealogical work. The latest threat is a cyanide ban in Romania.

Deep drilling at Red Chris has confirmed the expansion of the mineralised system at this copper/gold project in British Columbia.

Among the news of mine starts in the last couple of weeks are Minera Corona starting treatment of silver-lead ore at its new oxide plant in the Yaulicocha province of Lima department, Peru. India Resources is on the cusp of full scale mining and production at its Surda copper project in northeast India. Roca Mines has started shipments of molybdenite concentrates recently from its MAX molybdenum mine. Eurasian Natural Resources Corp held the official opening of the Kazakhstan Aluminium Smelter (KAS). And Kenmare Resources shipped its first ilmenite product from its Moma mine.

The expansions announced in the same period include Red Back Mining at the Tasiast gold mine in Mauritania. Silvercorp Metals’ 77.5% owned joint venture company, Henan Found Mining , has successfully concluded a contract to acquire 100% of the TLP silver-lead mine. Cameco Resources will target overall production increases of 70% from its in situ recovery (ISR) operations at Crow Butte, Nebraska and Smith Ranch-Highland, Wyoming. Shougang Hierro Peru is expanding iron ore output and Murchison Metals has significantly increased the JORC compliant mineral resources at Jack Hills to 153 Mt. The Quinsam coal mine is being expanded. Target Resources is increase its operations in Sierra Leone significantly. Sherwood Copper looks good to expand the Minto copper-gold mine in the Yukon.
