Becker Mining strengthens global position through new South African acquisition

Posted on 25 Feb 2010

As part of the Becker Group’s international strategy to supply energy distribution products to the mining sector, Becker Mining Systems has acquired the very successful South African electrical equipment specialists EMIS. “EMIS becoming a 100% subsidiary of Walter Becker South Africa “is a positive step for both companies. The new product range will be a substantial contributor to continued growth and with the sound financial backing and infrastructural support of an international organisation, there will also be additional growth for EMIS. We see further potential for these products in the South African metalliferous mining industry where we have established a firm base,” said Ken Quick, CEO, Becker Group of Companies in South Africa.

Dr.-Ing. Franz Becker, CEO of Becker Mining Systems adds: “What is important is, the EMIS product range and specialist skills complement the Becker Group’s product offering and extends the Group’s service to a broader local and international customer base”.

EMIS specialises in the design, manufacture, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment for mining, petrochemical and surface industries. The product portfolio includes conveyor starter and distribution panels, motor control centres, custom designed electrical distribution boards and electrical panels, as well as isolators and enclosures. In addition, the range encompasses conveyor control, protection and automation equipment, electrical components for hazardous areas and non-hazardous applications and control stations for heavy duty applications and harsh environments.

The acquisition of EMIS enhances Becker’s product portfolio in South Africa, which includes mining equipment – communication, collision avoidance, automation, electronics, transport, pumps, shaft safety, underground and tunnel supports, as well as lifting and maintenance equipment.

Becker Mining Systems is a global provider of mine wide solutions and is one of the leading suppliers of underground infrastructure systems within the fields of energy distribution, automation, communication as well as transportation and roof support.
