New Hagglunds CBM and TADS drives

rexroth_hagglunds.jpgThe new Hagglunds CBM hydraulic motor from Bosch Rexroth is the world’s most powerful direct drive and takes over from the tried-and-tested Hagglunds Marathon motor. The CBM packs 50% more torque into a motor that is smaller and up to 50% lighter than its predecessor. That gives it the world’s highest torque-to weight ratio. Bosch Rexroth said for its customers, “the new motor opens up new possibilities.”

The CBM not only handles heavier workloads, but also takes up less space and places less weight on the drive shaft. This means that customer machines, and in some cases the facilities that house them, can be smaller, lighter and simpler. The motor’s reduced installation requirements, combined with the higher productivity it allows, can mean lower overall investments and increased long-term revenue. Added to this are the unique operating advantages of a hydraulic direct drive: full torque from zero speed, protection from shock loads and four-quadrant operation. The CBM motor was developed in direct response to customer requests. Greater power is increasingly needed in many industries, not only mining but also wind power.

Based on the Hagglunds CB platform, the CBM has internal advances that allow it to supply 6,000 Nm/bar of specific torque. “The Hägglunds CBM satisfies the toughest new demands on the market,” says Lars Andren, one of the key members of the Hagglunds CBM development team. “With its introduction, we can provide the unique advantages of a hydraulic direct drive
to a broader range of applications than ever before.” Those looking to upgrade from the Marathon drive will be able to use direct retrofit kits to make exchanging the motor both quick and simple in existing machines. All customers, however, will benefit from the ease of installing the CBM, since it has splines that simplify attachment to the drive shaft. Shrink-disc adapters are also available.

A second new release is the Hagglunds Torque Arm Drive System (TADS) from Bosch Rexroth delivers high performance and high reliability. The company states: “Rugged, reliable and versatile, the Hagglunds TADS hydraulic drive system from Bosch Rexroth is a powerful, self-contained drive package for applications and systems where space is at a minimum.” The Hagglunds TADS unit represents maximum performance in smallest footprint possible by creating a self-contained drive package where the torque arm serves as the framework for mounting the complete drive system. This allows the TADS unit to occupy approximately the same space as a normal low speed, high torque motor with torque arm mounting, but eliminates the external equipment such as gearboxes or heavy pedestal foundation elements, which are no longer required. This means that customer machines, and in some cases the facilities that house them, can be smaller, lighter and simpler without sacrificing the power to handle heavier workloads making the TADS system an ideal hydraulic drive system for industries like mining and bulk materials handling.

The TADS unit offers machine designers the flexibility to integrate the power of Hagglunds hydraulic drives into the widest range of industrial applications by offering nine different modular configurations with both spline and shrink disc coupling options. The TADS unit comes preassembled and ready to mount on the process machinery’s drive shaft, saving installation time and costs. It can be installed using either an internal spline or hollow shaft with shrink disc couplings — and none of the extra hoses or control cabling typically required.
