Sandvik continues evolution of exploration drill range with the DE712

Posted on 20 Feb 2013

Sandvik has released the newest addition to its range of DE700 series surface exploration drills. The DE712 is based on the established DE710 drill, including all the necessary safety, health and environmental requirements for CE certification. “This highly productive and reliable rig offers customers peace of mind with increased safety on an already proven design”, said the announcement. Key upgrades include the rig being CE marked – meeting all requirements of the EU; it is based on the highly valued Australian guideline MDG 15 for mobile machinery for use in mines and also the ISO standard EN791 – Safety of Drill Rigs; and it has an EU Stage III CARB/EPA Tier 3 diesel engine.

The rig also has a ROPS-certified operator compartment, hydraulic operated left-hand and right-hand walkways; and an EDEEP process is in place – EMERST Design Evaluation for EME Procurement. Sandvik adds: “All of the attributes that have made the DE710 the drill of choice by many contractors around the globe have been maintained in this upgrade.” These include:

  • Depth capacity of 1,126 m (3693 ft) N
  • Pull force of 9.3 t and feed force of 5.5 t
  • A continuous torque of 475 Nm at 1,500 rpm
  • Compact design allowing it to fit in a standard 40 ft container

George Tophinke, Sandvik Mining’s Global Exploration Equipment Manager, said: “This rig has the right balance of world class design, high quality components and robust construction to minimise downtime and risk. It is based on the reliable DE710, which has sold nearly 500 units across the globe. There are new safety features in line with Sandvik’s ongoing focus on integrating environmental, health and safety solutions into our products.” Other additional safety features include lever guards to reduce risk of accidental operation, mast access package comprising of fall arrest system and mast platform, and alarm for jack leg operation. Rig access has been improved for easier maintenance and extra guards have been fitted for safer work environment.

The DE712 features a more powerful engine with power rating of 142 kW (190 hp) at 2,200 rpm. High quality pumps and motors in independent open loop circuits, and larger hydraulic valves and piping provide high energy efficiency and precise control of critical drilling functions.
