Nominations to the International Mining Technology Hall of Fame – full explanations please

A number of nominations have been sent in as just a name and the category the nominee might be inducted in. This is not enough – the college of voters needs a good explanation of why any person or team is being nominated, the technology for which they are being nominated and the importance this has been to the industry. By all means include Internet links. The better the nomination presentation, the more likely your candidate is to win, and if he, she or they do win, we need good information for the induction presentation. Some of the latest nominations in comminution include Fred Bond for the Bond Work Index, Harlow Hardinge for ball milling, John Starkey inventor of the SAGDesign test and Samuel Calvin McLanahan, one of the founders of McLanahan Corp.

Maxie Anderson, Joe House, Don Agers and Ronald Swanson have been nominated for solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW). Another recent nomination is James White, founder of Modular Mining Systems. Ralph Kress, ‘The Father Of The Off-Highway Truck,’ spent almost fifty years designing and developing mining trucks.  His ideas are still evident in the configuration of mine haulage trucks at surface mines throughout the world.

“Don MacLean’s (MacLean Engineering) belief in the importance of ore flow conditioning at the drawpoint and his willingness to foster and adapt new technologies enabled a regional manufacturer to make an international impact on the underground mining equipment scene.”

Sverker Hartwig, Chris Lybaert and Ludo Van Nederkassel have been nominated for the development of Atlas Copco’s VSD (variable speed drive) compressor technology, which drastically reduces energy consumption.

The Anderson Boyes design group responsible for the first coal shearer has been nominated. Anderson Boyes manufactured this shearer coal cutting machine between 1960 and 1985. Anderson Boyes became Anderson Strathclyde (via Anderson Mavor), then Anderson Longwall (after the controversial 1983 takeover by Charter International), Long-Airdox (after its 1995 sale by Charter, with the Motherwell manufacturing plant closed in 1997), DBT Deutsche Bergbau-Technik (2001), Bucyrus International (2007) and Caterpillar.
