The innovative Caterpillar Rock Flow System previously discussed in IM and currently being installed at the Codelco Andina block cave is the first full scale project of its type, and follows two completed trial operations at the Codelco Salvador operation. SKM, recently merging with Jacobs, is managing the delivery of the continuous extraction project, which consists of four sets of eight dozer type Rock Feeders (RF300), making 32 in all, with each set of RF300s feeding one RM900 Rock Mover with a 900 t/h capacity, making for a 3,600 t/h capacity overall, with the project aiming at ramping up to 150,000 t/month.
Each set was also to utilise an MMD Mineral Sizer, but one of the sizer positions was too close to ventilation infrastructure, meaning that three RM900 systems will be equipped with an MMD sizer with the fourth having an MMD Apron Feeder to feed across to the adjacent set. For any secondary breaking, it is understood that a monorail-mounted breaker system will be used. Service of the Rock Feeders will be managed using service drifts on the non-production side of the drawpoint, separated by a protective wall. The service drift will enable the RF300s to be pushed and pulled into position and greatly increases flexibility.
Overall, the Rock Flow system is to be highly automated, with real time draw control, and remote controlled drawing and moving of ore without vehicles or underground personnel. The system will maximise production from the drawpoints, while reducing ventilation requirements due to a smaller production area, and hugely reducing diesel fumes by eliminating LHDs.
Other key developments in continuous hard rock mining technology from Caterpillar as well as other OEMs as well as contractors and mines themselves will be covered in detail in IM Events’ Rapid Development Conference, being held in the Qubus Hotel in Krakow, Poland, from 28-30 September 2014.
