ThoroughTec highlights CYBERMINE E-learning in downturn

Posted on 4 Dec 2015

The global mining industry is experiencing one of the toughest periods in its history, and the war on inefficiency is at centre stage. ThoroughTec Simulation argues that high-fidelity simulators, integrated with the latest E-learning technology are increasingly seen as a solution to this challenge, with operations around the world investing heavily in these efficiency boosting systems. These technologies are constantly evolving and companies such as ThoroughTec Simulation, a leading provider of workforce optimisation solutions, are at the cutting edge of innovation and design.

“ThoroughTec continuously strives to enhance its CYBERMINE Simulator Systems to provide clients with the best possible training solution for safer and more productive operators,” says Richard Bellengere, VP of Operations at ThoroughTec. “We do this through continuous research and development, driven by the experiences and requirements of our client’s, around the world.” An example of this is ThoroughTec’s operator motion tracking system. Unlike older technologies on the market, the CYBERMINE motion tracking system does not require the operator to wear any special devices or equipment, it is completely passive and thus entirely unobtrusive.

This will help trainee operators to get a more authentic experience by being able to look around objects such as booms and shovels, as well as corners underground.” The operator has full control of the system and can activate or deactivate it at any time. “This is yet another tool to assist students operate in a more efficient and safe manner,” says Bellengere.  Another technology being offered in the CYBERMINE Simulator System is a powerful Mission Planner. “This allows instructors to set objectives or tasks for any particular exercise, against which the operator can be monitored and scored,” says Bellengere.

In addition to open ended ‘free play’ or time based exercises, the Mission Planner follows an ‘objectives’ based training approach and allows the instructor to create complex circuits and routes with checkpoints that the student will have to follow and complete. The flexibility and focus provided by the CYBERMINE Mission Planner puts the power in the hands of trainers, allowing them to identify and isolate inefficient practices and/or processes, targeting these for training intervention and correction.

ThoroughTec has been constantly refining its CYBERMINE E-learning systems, staying ahead of the market as the technology develops and becomes ever more interactive. “Our training department has grown substantially and works extremely hard to deliver what we believe to be the best heavy equipment operator training available,” notes Bellengere. This introductory level tool guides novice recruits through a particular vehicle’s basic controls and operation, as well as providing mine environment and site procedure orientation. “They’re incredibly interactive so the operators are totally engaged and learn at their own pace.” Examples include demonstrating the importance of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), conducting walk-around inspections, recognising and responding to hazards within the mine and identifying various signage.
