PDAC International Mines Ministers' Summit aims to foster collaboration

Posted on 11 Mar 2016

Earlier this week at PDAC in Toronto, The Honourable Jim Carr, Minister of Natural Resources, and the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade, participated at the International Mines Ministers’ Summit that took place during the meeting’s International Convention Trade Show & Investors Exchange.

The Ministers met with 14 counterparts from all regions of the world “to strengthen mining relations and foster collaboration between key international partners, non-governmental organisations and industry leaders.” During the summit, against the backdrop of the theme “The Mineral Industry as a Building Block of Strong Nations”, the Ministers emphasised the need to ensure that exploration and mining is undertaken in a sustainable manner, and that communities and Indigenous peoples are meaningfully engaged and benefit from development.

They also reiterated the critical role that governments play in ensuring that clear and stable processes are in place to promote investment and ensure that mining continues to be a source of jobs, prosperity and opportunity for communities across the globe. The Ministers “took the opportunity to underline Canada’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and to promote Canada’s brand as a global leader in exploration and mining development.”

“Canada remains one of the global leaders in sustainable development, innovation, environmental stewardship and Indigenous engagement. This Summit is a unique opportunity for mining leaders to come together in a multi-sector dialogue to discuss common issues, share experiences and collaborate,” said Carr. Freeland added: “I am thrilled that Toronto and Canada are welcoming the mining world at PDAC this week. We are firmly committed to seeing trade and investment in overseas markets benefit local communities while enhancing economic growth in Canada. This is an important opportunity to continue highlighting Canada’s leadership in corporate social responsibility and mining around the world.”
