The American Exploration & Mining Association (AEMA) honoured two Midwestern mining companies at its 122nd Annual Meeting recently in Reno, Nevada. Minnesota based PolyMet Mining received AEMA’s Environmental Excellence Award for its responsible development of the NorthMet project, located near Hoyt Lakes, Minnesota. Lundin Mining Corp’s Eagle mine, located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, received the Platinum Award for Corporate Excellence for its outstanding commitment to environmental responsibility, community engagement and employee safety.

“Both are striving to define modern mining and prove that high standards lead to a successful business model that benefits employees, their families, the projects’ communities, and their shareholders,” said Laura Skaer, AEMA Executive Director. “AEMA annually recognizes exceptional companies like PolyMet and Eagle mine because they deserve to be recognized for embodying the mining industry’s commitment to sustainable mining practices, environmental stewardship and commitment to the community.”

Both companies are implementing state-of-the-art technology and techniques to improve employee safety and maintain high environmental standards. They also share similarities in being modern new mines that are cleaning up legacy mining issues.

“We know that responsible stewardship of the environment in mining can only be achieved when the right people are involved, the appropriate resources are applied, and strong regulations are in place and followed. We are fortunate to have those qualities working for us at PolyMet and appreciate and are sincerely grateful for AEMA’s recognition of that fact,” said Jon Cherry, PolyMet Mining President and CEO.

Currently in permitting, PolyMet’s copper, nickel and precious metals mine will reuse and revitalize the former LTV Steel plant and tailings basin. The Eagle mine, a nickel, copper and precious metals mine, modernized the Humboldt Mill and associated facilities before beginning new mining operations in 2014. Proven reverse osmosis technology is the centerpiece for both companies’ water treatment efforts.
