Mining Indaba and Brunswick Group are working together again for the second annual Young Leaders Career Development Program, to be held in the morning of Thursday February 9 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) as part of the Investing in Mining Indaba 2017 – bringing ogether the next generation of leaders with the mining sector.
The opening keynote address will be given by Mosebenzi Zwane (pictured), the Minister of Mineral Resources of South Africa.
The program will unite undergraduate and masters students and recent graduates seeking permanent employment with senior mining industry professionals to discuss and debate the current and future state of the mining sector, the challenges it faces and the opportunities that it provides.
Students and recent graduates may attend for free and are invited to register online http://bit.ly/2017MIRegister. They will also receive free access to the official Investing in Mining Indaba exhibition hall where they can meet a vast array of companies and service providers in the mining industry.
The mines and miners of tomorrow will look and operate very differently from the industry as we know it today. Technology is bringing undreamed of innovation and possibility to the field while society’s expectations of mining companies are changing too. As the industry emerges from a period of low commodity prices, it must continue to invest in young talent who can help find solutions to these complex issues. But does the young talent want to be part of the mining industry? And do they know the requirements needed to gain access to it and how they may make a successful career?
These topics and more will be discussed in panel and Q&A sessions with participating organisations including Anglo American, Rio Tinto, the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, Standard Bank and Herbert Smith Freehills, to name just a few. An outline of the sessions can be found at http://bit.ly/2017YLCD .
Harry Chapman, director of content for Mining Indaba said, “This event was so popular last year that it now forms a permanent place in our annual official Investing in Mining Indaba program. We are excited to be able to create a platform for industry leaders to help advance future generations of mining professionals towards a successful career in mining.”
Itumeleng Mahabane, Managing Partner of Brunswick Group in South Africa, who will be moderating the event on the day, added, “Mining remains a critical component of our economy and our societies. Understanding the values, aspirations, expectations, as well as the frustrations of future leaders is vital if mining is to attract and retain much needed talent throughout the cycles. Brunswick is proud to be a part of this important initiative where the sector will meet the next generation to discuss their joint futures.”
