At the annual general meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) on April 30, 2017, Roy Slack, P.Eng. was announced as the Incoming President Elect of the CIM. Slack said “It is an honour to be nominated and appointed to this position and it is a great opportunity to give back to an industry that has been so good to me. The CIM is more relevant than ever at this time where we are seeing technical and financial conditions driving innovation towards a new state of mining.” Slack is now a member of the CIM National Council and the President’s Council, and will take over the role of President of the CIM in 2019.
Slack is the President of Cementation Canada and a graduate of Queen’s University in Kingston with a degree in Mining Engineering. A long term member of the CIM, he was the Chair and a member of the team that revived the Northern Gateway Branch of the CIM which was recognised in 2008 with the Mel W. Bartley Outstanding Branch Award. In that same year he was awarded the Engineer’s Medal for Entrepreneurship by the Professional Engineers of Ontario. In 2009 he was given the Metal Mining Society Award by the Canadian Institute of Mining and in 2012 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International. He has been active in numerous safety initiatives and in 2013 was appointed to the Province of Ontario’s first Prevention Council to advise the government on workplace safety. He currently serves on the CIM Safety Council.
