What’s new in battery-powered underground trackless equipment

In the February issue, John Chadwick looks at new Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) going into the production and development environments underground, and trials of others. Artisan Vehicles describes itself as “the biggest game-changer among underground mining equipment OEMs” and, amongst other places is putting trucks and LHDs into Kirkland Lake Gold.

MacLean Engineering is another company that has done a lot of work on underground battery haulage and has now completed some 200 km of ramp run trials on its battery electric BT3 boom truck.

Aramine’s battery miniLoader is an interesting unit, as are the Evolution truck and LHD from RDH.

As would be expected, the majors – Sandvik, Atlas Copco, Caterpillar and Komatsu Mining – have interesting developments.

The artcle also takes a look at the Global Mining Standards and Guidelines Group’s BEV guidelines.
