New Century Resources has awarded a A$40 million engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to CIMIC Group member Sedgman for the Century zinc mine restart in Queensland, Australia. Sedgman will be responsible for the reconfiguration, refurbishment and operational readiness of the Century processing plant at Lawn Hill and the Karumba Port Facility in Queensland as part of the arrangement.
The deal will also see Sedgman provide civil, structural, mechanical, piping and electrical works, which are to be commissioned based on the results of the project’s front end engineering design (FEED) study. Sedgman Managing Director Grant Fraser said: “This contract is a valued addition to our mineral processing portfolio. Having previously worked with the Sedgman team for over ten years, I am very confident that New Century has partnered with a world-class project delivery team. We are pleased to continue working with New Century Resources to deliver Sedgman’s full project cycle service offering, adding value from feasibility study through to operation. The Century Zinc mine is an important part of the Queensland mining industry and we are looking forward to re-starting the mine and using our technical expertise to achieve successful outcomes for our client.”
Sedgman previously collaborated with New Century Resources in November last year to complete a feasibility study regarding the restart of the Century Zinc mine, concentrate pipeline and Karumba port. Early work on the development subsequently began at the site in December last year. The project is currently noted to be on track to re-start production in the third quarter of this year. Additionally, New Century has selected Ausenco as the preferred bidder for a new A$1.7 million contract, which will involve the refurbishment and commissioning of operations associated with the Century processing plant, slurry pipeline and Karumba Port Facility.
New Century Director Peter Watson said: “Having previously worked with the Sedgman team for over ten years, I am very confident that New Century has partnered with a world-class project delivery team for the refurbishment and commissioning process. The Sedgman team will also complement the existing management team within New Century, together providing a great combination of long-term site knowledge and external expertise.”
