The BEUMER Group, based in Beckum, Germany, a leading international manufacturer of intralogistics systems in the areas of conveyor and loading systems, palletising and packaging technology as well as sorting and distribution systems, has taken over fellow German company FAM GmbH, Magdeburg, a major supplier of conveyor systems and loading technology. The contracts were signed with the aim of completing the closing by the end of May 2022. With this, the BEUMER Group is also significantly strengthening its market position in the area of large equipment. FAM is one of the world’s leading full-service providers of bulk material handling and processing systems.
The move comes after well publicised recent developments where key FAM investors withdrew support for the company while it was still undergoing restructuring and repositioning to improve its global footprint and order intake, including an increased presence in Brazil following significant growth in the Chilean market. FAM has delivered some of the most high profile in-pit crushing and conveying & bulk handling systems worldwide – notable examples being three fully mobile units designed for conveying overburden with a throughput capacity of 4,000 t/h each at the Uzbekcoal Angren mine in Uzbekistan and the world’s largest compact bucketwheel capable of 14,500 t/h supplied to Codelco’s Radomiro Tomic copper mine in Chile.
The statement said the “business areas of the two companies complement each other ideally, according to the analysis of industry experts. With more than 4,500 employees in over 70 countries, the BEUMER Group focuses, among other things, on conveyor technology in mining and for mines. The BEUMER Group has also been firmly established on the market in bulk material technology for decades. FAM’s leading technology for transporting and processing minerals fits well with the portfolio of the BEUMER Group.”
In the future, this competence of the BEUMER Group it says “will be supplemented by the know-how and the global set-up of FAM in the project planning of systems in these areas. In addition to planning and engineering, FAM brings the entire value chain, including after-sales service, to the BEUMER Group. As a global solution provider, FAM has been combining specialist expertise, engineering and project management for over 100 years. The BEUMER Group offers FAM a long-term perspective based on the highest quality, sustainability and innovation: As a family-run and 100% self-financed company, the BEUMER Group has been developing tailor-made system solutions for mining, among other things, for almost 90 years.”
For Dr Christoph Beumer, Managing Partner and CEO of the BEUMER Group, this takeover underpins the company’s long-term orientation in the segment of extraction, processing and handling of raw materials. The company motto, according to Dr Beumer, is long-term success and not short-term gain. In this respect, it is necessary to act in a straight line and consistently, even in difficult economic times.” Beumer emphasise that they have done their homework in recent years and are now consistently investing in a qualitative expansion of their portfolio.
The takeover of FAM by the BEUMER Group was made possible by a restructuring at the German location, including a transfer company, after which 185 employees will remain in Magdeburg, as well as a successful reorganisation of the global network. FAM Managing Director Torsten Gerlach: “The management is happy to have found a strategic investor for growth in the BEUMER Group. We see good potential for sustained growth in orders and sales. Against this background, the acquisition makes more than sense.”
