TALPA’s AI-based analytics platform improves mining fleet performance

Posted on 16 May 2023

Mining companies strive for maximum productivity and efficiency in their operations, and TALPA, the software firm based in Essen, Germany, has developed a cloud-based data analytics platform that it says is set to transform the way mining fleets perform.

By leveraging high-resolution machine data and various AI-based applications, TALPA targets the workflows of all stakeholders involved in designing, operating, and maintaining mining equipment, helping them make data-driven decisions in real time.

TALPA’s platform offers several features that improve machine availability and reduce downtime, ultimately enhancing the productivity of mining fleets. One of the standout applications is the Health Insights feature, which provides near-real-time information on all errors and warnings registered on machines in the fleet. This allows OEMs and end-users to prioritise issues that could lead to significant machine breakdowns and take immediate action to prevent potential downtime.

TALPA’s system also provides a shift report for the entire fleet on a single screen, with drill-down capabilities to a single machine and error in just a few seconds. This feature enables decision-makers to fully digitise their shift handover, even in remote mode. The asset overview statistics menu also shows each machine’s history of technical conditions, ranking errors by duration and occurrence. This information helps maintenance teams prepare for regular service cycles, significantly reducing time in the workshop and increasing the mean time between failures for the machines.

TALPA’s platform works with any type of data that can be collected on the machines, such as J1939 standard signals, OEM-proprietary protocols, GPS, and other positioning signals, as well as data from embedded motion sensors. This allows for the integration of any type and model of machine, regardless of their power drive. The end-to-end approach, which includes certified data loggers that can send data directly to the platform, and software and user management on a subscription basis, ensures cost-efficiency for clients of any size.

The AI-based analytics platform developed by TALPA it says has been refined by experienced data science teams who continuously update and refine the models from past and ongoing projects. This ensures that calculations are automated and provide high-precision information, even when direct sensor signals are unavailable. The ecosystem approach to development ensures that the system is applicable for any type of operation and for various stakeholder groups, such as operations and sustainability managers, maintenance crews, procurement, or even top management.

TALPA is set to present its platform at The Electric Mine 2023 conference in Tucson, Arizona, next week. This presentation will highlight how TALPA’s solution can help build awareness of operations and maintenance needs for mining operations, ultimately revolutionising mining fleet performance
