SANY Silicon Energy opens Africa’s largest single-unit hybrid microgrid project for mining

Posted on 6 Jan 2025

China’s SANY, better known in mining for its rigid and wide body mining trucks as well as its hydraulic mining excavators, is building its position in energy infrastructure for mines as well. On December 29, SANY Silicon Energy marked a significant milestone in the overseas ‘Solar + Storage + Diesel’ microgrid power generation sector with the Zambia Ruida Mining Microgrid Power Project being officially launched.

SANY stated: “As Africa’s largest single-unit hybrid microgrid project for mining operations, this marks a significant step for us in promoting green energy transformation and sustainable development across Africa.”

The project features a 13 MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system coupled with a 39 MWh battery energy storage system and a diesel generator as a backup power source. They form an advanced integrated microgrid system that seamlessly combines solar, storage, and diesel technologies. Designed to ensure stable and reliable electricity for mining operations, SANY says the project achieves energy self-sufficiency while significantly reducing dependency on traditional energy sources and enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability.

From signing the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to commissioning, it took only four months. Despite challenges such as Zambia’s complex geography, harsh climatic conditions, and logistical delays caused by underdeveloped infrastructure, SANY says its team demonstrated exceptional adaptability and efficiency.

It added: “The successful launch of this project marks a new chapter for our green mining initiatives in Africa. It lays a solid foundation for the continent’s green energy future and reinforces our commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions globally. Building on the expertise and technological advantages gained from this project, we will continue to ‘Illuminate Africa’ with ‘SANY Speed.’ By actively driving the implementation of more green energy projects, we aim to lead global renewable energy industry trends and contribute Chinese wisdom to the global energy transition.”
