Allison TerraTran™ expands into wide body mining dump truck market

Posted on 4 Feb 2025

Allison Transmission has announced the availability of its TerraTran™ fully automatic transmission in the wide body mining dump (WBMD) market for the first time.

Allison has partnered with Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group (XCMG) to integrate the transmission into their XG110 WBMD trucks. The first series of 225 trucks equipped with TerraTran have been delivered and are supporting mining operations in Brazil.

“We selected TerraTran for our WBMD vehicles due its ability to enhance vehicle productivity, maneuverability and overall drivability,” said Hu Deping, Vice General Manager, XCMG Heavy Vehicle. “Our relationship with Allison is built on a foundation of performance and quality, and we trust that their products will continue to deliver for our mining customers.”

An uprate variant of the proven Allison 4000 Series™, TerraTran is purpose built for the global construction and mining markets. Allison designed the propulsion solution based on voice of customer input, which indicated the need for the proven reliability and durability of the 4000 Series transmission, but with increased horsepower, torque and GVW capability, while also adding fast reverse capability.

“Allison has more than 65 years of experience moving earth, minerals and precious metals around the world,” said Kartik Ramanan, Executive Director, Global Off-Highway, and Global Customer Support and Service Engineering, Allison Transmission. “The introduction of the TerraTran to the WBMD segment marks yet another milestone in Allison’s commitment to providing solutions that deliver unrivalled performance and productivity for our customers in the mining market.”

Allison says it is the only supplier of a comprehensive lineup of products for the mining segment, offering transmissions built for 90 t to 136 t vehicles. TerraTran provides maximum power of up to 800 hp and can support up to 3,025 lbs/ft of torque. It also features seven forward gears, two reverse gears as well as hardened internal components built to last longer and perform in even the harshest landscapes.

Allison Transmission also recently debuted the 6000 Series™ transmission for wide body dump trucks at Bauma China 2024. The 6625 WBD transmission is designed to meet the high-performance demands of wide body trucks under rigorous operating conditions, offering unparalleled operational efficiency and reduced total cost of ownership.

“The launch of the 6000 Series transmission in WBD trucks underscores Allison’s commitment to delivering specialised solutions to customers in China and the export markets they serve,” said Brian Geiselhart, Executive Director, Asia Pacific Sales, Allison Transmission. “The diversification of our portfolio supports Allison’s strategic growth initiative to increase our market share in off-highway applications outside North America.”

The solution was developed based on the 6000 Off-Road SeriesTM (ORS) transmissions, which have a proven track record as reliable workhorses in mining trucks worldwide. Through close OEM partnership with premium brands such as Lingong Heavy Machinery Co. Ltd (LGMG) and stringent field testing in Indonesia, Vietnam and Chile, the Allison 6625 WBD transmission has proven its effectiveness in the WBD truck sector. Originally designed for heavy-duty vehicles including off-highway trucks, oil field rigs and cranes, this transmission now supports higher-tonnage WBD trucks, reaching a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 136 metric tons. As the WBD truck market continues to expand and evolve, Allison says it is “committed to continually updating our product portfolio to provide customers with a broader portfolio of solutions to choose from based on their unique needs.”

Featuring Allison’s patented torque converter and Continuous Power Technology™, the 6625 WBD transmission “enables smooth, high torque starts and delivers continuous powerful output. To anticipate maintenance needs, the transmission features advanced diagnostic capabilities, allowing drivers to monitor transmission status in real time. The Shift Energy Management function effectively protects the transmission clutch and reduces shift shocks.”
