SANY electric wide body trucks deployed by contractor DTP at Kibali

Posted on 10 Feb 2025

Four 72 t payload fully electric SANY SKT105E wide body mining trucks have been deployed at Barrick’s Kibali Gold Mine in DRC, in what is described as a “groundbreaking first” for the customer, mining contractor DTP Mining, which is part of Bouygues Travaux Publics. SANY said the move with DTP marks a major step forward in its shared commitment towards more sustainable mining practices.

Equipped with two electric motors delivering a peak power of 740 kW and a 420-kWh battery, these trucks represent a major advancement in reducing environmental impact. This initiative is expected to cut DTP’s carbon footprint by up to 80% when compared to previous solutions for this specific application, and eliminate approximately 900 t of CO₂ emissions annually. SANY said: “This project aligns with our vision for a more responsible and environmentally conscious future in mining.”

DTP stated: “We are thrilled to announce the deployment of four fully electric SANY trucks that will operate on the ROM pad at the Kibali Gold Mine project – a groundbreaking achievement and a first for DTP…this advancement represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future, enabling us to reduce our carbon footprint and enhance sustainability in mining operations…these decarbonisation successes are achieved using green electricity, primarily sourced from our client’s hydropower installation. This initiative marks a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable mining practices and aligns perfectly with our vision for a greener, more responsible future.”

DTP has been a mining contractor at Kibali since 2012 through its subsidiary Kibali Mining Services (KMS) with the current contract running to 2026. A total of 260 Mt of material have been moved from Kibali pits in this period over an area of almost 700 hectares. As it did at the Gounkoto and Tongon sites, DTP says has created and implemented a customised training programme to teach local mechanics how to perform maintenance operations on mining and excavation equipment and give them the opportunity to develop their careers and move into supervisory positions at DTP-operated mines in the longer term.
