The new model is a diesel-electric-hydraulic loading machine “featuring the best advantages of rope shovel and hydraulic excavator dig attachments.” It is designed to deliver P&H 2800XPC-class throughput while requiring materially less diesel fuel than a comparable hydraulic excavator. The new loading machine should first appear on the market in late 2013 and will allow mines greater flexibility where connection to the electrical grid is unavailable. This major shovel news follows on from the news of Caterpillar’s 6120B H FS hydraulic excavator, which is being built at the former Bucyrus factory in South Milwaukee rather than in Dortmund, which will concentrate on the high volume models below the 6090 FS size class. Two 6120B H FS machines have been built to date.
