For over 30 years, GIW has offered the ‘Slurry Course’ officially known as Transportation of Solids Using Centrifugal Pumps. The 2009 Course will be held March 23-27. This in depth course offers engineers an overall look at slurry transport and is based on the 3rd Edition text, Slurry Transport Using Centrifugal Pumps by Wilson et.al. Three authors of the course text team up with two other industry experts and GIW staff to bring cutting edge experience from the field. This five day course has sold out the past three years and its popularity contributed to the addition of two new courses for 2009.
Mineral Processing Using Centrifugal Pumps will be held February 9-13. This five day course builds on the principles of slurry transport that are taught in the original Slurry Course and specifically looks at mill circuit operation. Using the new clear loop unveiled at MinExpo along with full size test loops at the GIW Hydraulic Lab, participants will observe principles taught during the course up close and personal. This course is designed for engineers who are involved in the design or operation of slurry pumping systems in mineral processing plants.
Crowds gathered around the new portable slurry loop showcased at MinExpo this year in Las Vagas. Demonstrations simulated a typical mill cylcone feed application that used an impressive clear casing pump. GIW staff narrated the show pointing out specific features of the loop. The 45o incline allowed customers to see ‘duning’ while the shifting pipe diameters displayed the effects of a ‘settling bed.’ GIW says it “has long believed that by helping customers understand the integration of the entire slurry transport system, GIW can help reduce the total cost of ownership. It is with this goal in mind that GIW expanded it’s Technical Training Series for 2009.
Correct maintenance and understanding of how and why equipment works is also a necessary component to lowering costs. Maintenance of Centrifugal Pumps is a hands-on three day course intended for maintenance and operations supervisors. Using demonstrations and classroom instruction maintenance fundamentals are taught. These include troubleshooting an underperforming pump, assembly and maintenance of a pump and nose gap effect on performance. Technical experts from several companies will join GIW staff to provide insight on vibration, seals, and bearings. For a full list of course subjects, please refer to the GIW website. This Maintenance Course will be held May 19-21 in Grovetown, Georgia.
