URS Corp has been awarded a contract by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold to provide construction services for a mine tailings facility at the Morenci mine in southeast Arizona. The contract has a maximum value of approximately $104 million to URS. URS will construct a new tailings facility, including a pumping station, tailings dam and seepage collection system. The project is scheduled to be completed in September 2015.In 2011, Morenci completed the ramp up of its mining rates to 635,000 t/d and milling rates to some 50,000 t/d. It is advancing a feasibility study to expand mining and milling capacity at Morenci to process additional sulphide ore identified through exploratory drilling. The project would increase milling rates from the current level of 50,000 t/d to 115,000 t/d and target incremental annual copper production of approximately 225 Mlb.
