The CIM Journal – a quarterly compilation of technical papers from the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) – will be officially launched at the CIM Conference and Exhibition 2010 in Vancouver, British Columbia, from May 9-13. The new publication is the reinvigorated forum for CIM peer-reviewed technical papers, designed to replace the online CIM Bulletin and will include “cutting edge [papers], offering leading expertise,” according to Chuck Edwards, Chairman of the CIM Publications Committee and CIM incoming President-elect.
“We’re making the move to publishing this way – on paper and in full colour – because people want it,” says Edwards. The journal will be available to members at no cost beyond the regular membership fee. Papers will be published in French or English, with the abstracts provided in both languages. Initially, each issue will include eight to ten papers, but should there be a higher volume of outstanding quality papers, it will expand accordingly.
As the journal launches, some CIM societies – those with more robust conferences, proceedings and journal businesses – may be more represented. However, Edwards and the Publications Committee are available to assist the publications chairs of all CIM societies to ensure the interests of their members are served with quality papers.
Edwards: “we developed the tag line for the journal: ‘Beyond Information – leading expertise for the mineral industries of the future.’ This information will help members in their jobs. It will span across industry, not just focus on one field, to help members to bridge the gap.”
Authors are encouraged to get their submissions in for consideration for inclusion in upcoming issues. An online submission system is accessible from the front page of the CIM website at www.cim.org. Papers covering the diverse range of interests under the CIM umbrella are welcome – from geology to extraction and processing, to beyond closure.
“This is just what CIM needs to keep its reputation as a leading technical society,” Edwards adds. “I’m really excited about it. It’s going to be a huge benefit to CIM, and CIM members.”
