Camborne School of Mines (CSM) competed in the 36th Annual International Mining Games, which was held in Missouri USA. Camborne’s Mens A team placed second overall in their division and the Coeds placed second overall in their division. CSM as a school placed joint first, which is their highest finish.
International Mining assisted in obtaining sponsorship for the 21 member CSM team. CSM A team captain, Brodie Leggett said “It is a fantastic result that justifies all the work that has gone in, a result that could not have happened without your support.”
The Co-Ed competition was held on the 5th April. This year’s team had come with the purpose of defending their titles as reigning mucking champions from the previous year and overall second position in the whole competition. The Sandvik team was made of three men and three women. This year a total of 18 teams competed in the co-ed division, including teams from Colorado, Western Australia, Queensland, Brazil, Missouri, Kentucky, Montana and Virginia. The team members put in every effort in all events and it showed when the team achieved medal positions in five of the seven events. The highlight of these achievements was retaining gold in the mucking event, beating the competition by a substantial difference in time of just under two minutes. Other accolades included placing second in surveying, swede saw, goldpan and track. The team was placed second in the overall competition, only one point separated them from the leaders WASM.
Leggett stated “On the 6th April it was time for our two competing men’s teams to prove their worth. They were kitted out in their clean washed kits, raring and ready to go for the days competition. There were 15 men’s teams competing this year and the competition was as tough as ever. The CSM clan were there to offer great support for the two competing teams, waving the flags and shouting encouragement. With our success in the Co-Ed events the day before, the Camborne teams had gained a substantial audience following. The Men’s A medalled in three of the seven events. They were first up in the mucking event and reinforced Camborne’s reputation of being top muckers by placing first.”
Men’s B also gave it their all and finished a credible 6th in the competition. A highlight for the team was placing 2nd in the surveying event. The team also placed 4th in the mucking event, just missing out on a medal position.
