ICMM has welcomed Antofagasta Minerals and Glencore as members. Their respective chief executive officers, Diego Hernández and Ivan Glasenberg, were welcomed at the latest meeting of ICMM’s Council of CEOs in Miami on Wednesday May 14. “We are delighted to have Antofagasta and Glencore join ICMM,” said Mark Cutifani, Chief Executive of Anglo American and ICMM Chair. “It signals the commitment of both companies to working with their peers to strengthen sustainable development performance in the mining and metals industry.”Antofagasta Minerals and Glencore are the fifth and sixth companies to join ICMM through its new member admission process that was introduced in May 2010. As part of their membership, both companies will be required to report publicly on their sustainable development performance on an annual basis.
Both companies were recommended for membership by an independent expert review panel on the understanding that each company meets the full membership requirements within a two-year period.
“We are very pleased to have joined the mining industry’s leading sustainability body,” said Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore. “Glencore’s membership of ICMM reflects the significant progress we have made in integrating sustainability across the group since becoming a public company in May 2011.
“It also recognises our ability to combine and enhance good practices following the completion of the acquisition of Xstrata. We look forward to working closely with our fellow members to identify solutions to sustainability challenges facing the industry today.”
Diego Hernández, CEO of Antofagasta Minerals, said: “For Antofagasta Minerals, joining ICMM reaffirms the company’s commitment to responsible and sustainable mining development. We’re very proud to be the first private Chilean mining company incorporated into this organisation.”
