CRU investigates how far Chinese demand can drive international copper market recovery

Posted on 29 Jul 2010

As the global refined copper market continues its recovery, there are increasing concerns around how strained the concentrates market is becoming. While Western world demand remains stable, Chinese demand continues to grow. It now accounts for over 30% of the global custom market, and Chinese smelter expansions account for around 80% of planned expansions worldwide – fuelling concerns that the market will become even more constrained. CRU’s new 2010 Copper Smelting In China study is a unique work designed to help clients understand the latest developments in China’s copper markets, and the extent to which Chinese smelters are driving the global concentrate market.

This slidepack study fully uses the expertise and contacts of CRU’s offices in Beijing and London and it analyses the latest developments in China’s smelting and refining industries, with a special focus on 16 major smelters which account for almost 80% of Chinese refined copper production. Providing both industry analysis and 16 individual smelter profiles, this study examines:

• Latest view of China’s copper industry, and China’s role in the global concentrate market
• Availability of raw materials and growing use of scrap
• Upstream investment in mine projects
• Trends in trade of refined copper and concentrates, and China’s concentrate balance

16 individual smelter profiles – 2 slides each – allowing detailed analysis and benchmarking of the major Chinese smelters, with an examination of their key operating data and strategy information – Baiyin (Baiyin Non Ferrous Group), Chifeng Jinfeng (Yunnan Copper), Chifeng Jinjian (Tongling Group), Daye (Daye Non Ferrous), Dongying Fangyuan (Shandong Dongying Fangyuan Non Ferrous), Guixi (Jiangxi Copper), Jinchang (Tongling Group), Jinchuan (Jinchuan Non Ferrous), Jinlong (Tongling Group/Sumitomo), Kunming (Yunnan Copper), Ningbo Jintian (Zhejiang Ningbo Jintian Copper), Shandong Jinsheng (Shandong Jinsheng Non Ferrous), Xinye (Shanghai Xinye Copper), Yanggu Xiangguang (Yanggu Xiangguang Copper), Yantai Pengui (Yantai Pengui Copper) and Zhangjiagang (Tongling Group).
