EcoPhos invests in Veolia technology for phosphate fertiliser production

Posted on 30 May 2016

EcoPhos, an innovative provider of technological solutions for the global phosphate market, has awarded Veolia Water Technologies, Inc a contract to supply two state-of-the-art HPD® evaporation and crystallisation systems. Veolia’s HPD® systems will be an essential part of a new fertiliser production facility in Egypt which EcoPhos is providing to its end-customer Evergrow. The HPD systems will be installed as two separate units and will include a calcium chloride pre-concentration and concentration plant as well as a phosphoric acid concentration system. Both HPD systems are key components to ensure the final production of water soluble, high-quality fertiliser.

At the new fertiliser facility in Egypt, the Veolia process equipment will contribute towards production of 60,000 t of di-calcium phosphate (DCP), 33,600 t of purified phosphoric acid (PPA), and 90,000 t per year of granular, anhydrous calcium chloride. The phosphate end product is sold into the agricultural and animal feed markets and, following the start-up of the plant at the end of 2017, will as such contribute to the economic sustainability of Evergrow’s customers.

“The professionalism of Veolia’s team was remarkable, they offered a right-first-time, smart and integrated process solution with a low energy consumption”, said Laurent Palierne, Business Development Manager at EcoPhos. “Veolia’s equipment in the overall plant will both concentrate phosphoric acid to 85% H3PO4 and 160,000 t/y of calcium chloride of which, 90,000 t/y will be granulated to 96% CaCl2. Purified calcium chloride is a co-product of our eco-friendly, proprietary EcoPhos process and results from the reaction of hydrochloric acid with low-grade rock to produce DCP and PPA.”
