Data on 1,286 global metal mining projects with budgeted investments of $562,332 million

This issue includes the first of the regular project analyses that are being provided by Raw Materials Group. Tampakan  and Caspiche (copper-gold), Krumovgrad (gold), Andina (copper), Mana (gold), Tshipi Borwa (manganese), expansion at Marandoo and Iron Ore Co of Canada, Sotkamo nickel-zinc, Zanaga iron ore and Mmamantswe coal are just a few of the scores of projects and mines covered in this issue.The massive 2,400 Mt Tampakan project (estimated 13.5 Mt of copper and 15.8 Moz of gold).  Tampakan in the Philippines is projected to produce 370,000 t of copper and 360,000 oz of gold per year. Krumovgrad in Bulgaria could produce over 730,000 oz of gold for Dundee Precious Metals using conventional fine grinding and CIL technology.

Codelco plans to invest $6,400 million in the development of its Proyecto Nueva Andina (PNA) Phase II copper project in Chile. The plan is to raise the present processing capacity of Andina’s concentrator from 94,000 t/d to 150,000 t/d of ore.

In Burkina Faso SEMAFO is to expand Mana’s plant capacity for a fourth time to 8,000 t/d of blended gold ore.

Pallinghurst advised that mine development at Tshipi Borwa in South Africa is expected to commence in the first half of 2011 at an estimated cost of $200 million. Full capacity will be some 2.4 Mt/y of direct shippable manganese ore.

Rio Tinto has approved a $933 million extension of Marandoo iron ore mine’s life in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Rio is also to invest $277 million in expansion of concentrate production capacity at Iron Ore Co of Canada.

Exeter has secured an option to purchase water rights for the Caspiche gold-copper project in Chile.

Cameco has signed two agreements to buy uranium produced at the Sotkamo nickel-zinc mine in eastern Finland owned by Talvivaara Mining.

Xstrata is exercising its option over the Zanaga iron ore project in the Republic of Congo.

Aviva announced that a study confirmed that export grade thermal coal can be produced from the company’s Mmamantswe project in Botswana.
