METS Ignited is an industry-led, government-funded, Growth Centre for the mining equipment, technology and services (METS) sector. Its stated mission is: “To strengthen Australia’s position as a global hub for mining innovation, and, enhance the global competitive advantage of the Australian METS industry.”
Ric Gros CEO, METS Ignited recently highlighted what the group sees as industry knowledge priorities for the METS sector. “Developing capabilities to compete in a global market place, reducing barriers to innovation, advancing mine autonomy and robotics, reducing the footprint of mining, advancing interoperability of data and systems, and improving exploration technologies, are captured in the Industry Knowledge Priorities (IKPs) for the Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) sector. METS Ignited together with industry and research partners, Austmine and CSIRO, have developed the IKPs for the METS sector to help influence strategic areas of direction to create a sustainable global advantage for the Australian METS sector.”
“The IKPs, an element of the Sector Competitiveness Plan (SCP), for the METS sector are outcome-focussed priorities intended to strengthen and increase the competitive advantage for the Australian METS sector. Six IKPs have been identified as a result of consultation with the METS and mining sectors alongside with our SCP partners Austmine, CSIRO and VCI. The IKPs were further shaped by the global megatrends impacting the mining ecosystem, as well as emerging challenges and technology trends. The IKPs fall into two key category areas:
- management skills and capabilities needed to make the sector more competitive; and
- research and development required to ensure that the sector remains relevant.
The knowledge priorities address the opportunities for step-change improvements in global mining challenges, creating a critical mass through identifying and developing clusters formed around either areas of specific expertise or natural geographic groupings of complementary skills, and increasing commercialisation of innovation.”
