Barrier Group has launched a new business, Barrier-Ex Ltd, to provide specialist ATEX and IECEx certified technology to industries dealing with potentially explosive atmospheres. The UK-based business will supply hazardous area solutions, focusing on the provision of explosion-proof enclosures and systems, in addition to hazardous area lighting equipment. Serving sectors such mining, Barrier-Ex Ltd will design and manufacturer bespoke solutions at its facility in Wallsend, utilising highly-tested OEM components and accessories.
The enclosures, which contain components such as switches, terminals and transformers, protect human life, plant and equipment from explosions and subsequent fire hazards. Initially utilising engineers from within the Barrier Group, the new business aims to create ten new jobs within the next 12 months and increase its manufacturing capabilities to produce enclosure systems under licence in the North East of the UK. Barrier-Ex Ltd is also using a skilled supply chain of North Tyneside engineering businesses to support its operations. Alongside the supply and bespoke engineering of equipment, the company also provides training, consultancy services, project management and technical advice services.
Having been certified to ISO 9001 and BS EN 80079-34 industry requirements, Barrier-Ex Ltd, is also undertaking a major certification project in consultation with one of the leading UK materials testing and product qualifying organisations. The project aims to expand the capabilities and inclusivity of existing ‘[ia]’ certification to release a new certificate by New Year 2017, which will expand the scope of Barrier-Ex Ltd’s operations in Hazardous Area Operations while also creating a new standard for OEMs.
Steven Lee, who has more than ten years’ experience in construction, manufacturing and engineering, has been recruited as Managing Director working alongside Technical Director, Martyn Chapple and Lead Electrical Design Engineer, Jason Hamilton. Lee said: “This new business will support the ongoing evolution of hazardous area operations through the development of new technology and industry standards.
