As part of its mining technology innovation program, Chilean mining explosives major Enaex (subsidiary of the Sigdo Koppers Group) recently launched Robominer®, a teleoperated robot for mine safety and exploration, developed in collaboration with SRI International. Robominer technology is designed to improve safety for miners, while expanding access to minerals that are difficult or expensive to reach.

In its first phase of development, Robominer will have the ability to capture the mining environment in real time with 3D vision, monitor gases, temperature and measure topography. In the next phase of development in 2018, Robominer will be able to manipulate objects and materials.

“Projects such as Robominer with SRI – as well as our Mine iTruck teleoperated mobile explosives manufacturing truck – will enhance mining operations and resources by taking care of our greatest asset, which is people,” said Juan Andrés Errázuriz, CEO of the Enaex Group. “Through the development of this type of project, Enaex wants to contribute in the conversion of Chile from a mineral exporting country to an exporter of innovative technology for the mining industry.”
