Lonmin has announced two major new initiatives that are examples of what the company describes as its “continued commitment to working in partnership with local communities to create a sustainable future for each and every individual within the Greater Lonmin Community.”

The company aims to make a measurable and long lasting difference in education, recognizing that education is a key to achieving economic and social prosperity. Lonmin has committed to invest R65 million over five years in the improvement of education in the areas around its mines in Marikana and Limpopo, South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Education. This investment will be used in a number of areas including to improve the infrastructure of our schools, to support educators in their roles and provide learner support.

The company also notes that currently around 38% of its workforce are living in hostel accommodation.  Now, Lonmin has agreed, in addition to our existing housing schemes, to work in partnership with Rand Merchant Bank to allow the provision of an additional 6,000 employee homes over the next five years. This will allow the company to eliminate all hostel accommodation for Lonmin employees.
