Canadian Natural progresses Horizon oil sands with P&H shovels

Posted on 29 Sep 2006

An order for three P&H 4100C BOSS electric shovels has been placed by Canadian Natural Resources. Canadian Natural will use the new P&H equipment for Phase 1 of its Horizon oil sands project in Alberta. This mine, expected to cost C$6.8 billion, will produce 110,000 bbl/d of light sweet synthetic crude oil, commencing the second half of 2008.

The new BOSS machines will feature state-of-the-art systems, such as the P&H Centurion¦ System, the all-new cab with the P&H Loading Control Center, and more.  The 1,360 t weight of BOSS shovels is supported on 3,505 mm track pads, to provide efficient maneuverability in the soft ground conditions that are found in the oil sands of Northern Alberta.

P&H Mining Equipment announced in May 2006 its newest lines of electric mining shovels and rotary blasthole drills, known collectively as the P&H C-Series. The shovel line comprises five models: the 4100XPC, 4100C BOSS, 4100C, 2800XPC and 2300XPC.  C-Series machines feature numerous evolutionary improvements that enhance reliability and productivity, ergonomically-enhanced operating environments, and the proven Centurion¦ control platform, providing unmatched capabilities and control for today and into the future (see IM, September 2006 issue).

The 4100C BOSS shovels for Canadian Natural are scheduled to start digging during the first half of 2008.  P&H MinePro Services – Canada will assemble and commission the machines, as well as optimize their performance through a life cycle management agreement. It provides a wide range of parts, field support, and field repair services for all types of large mining equipment regardless of make. A state-of-the-art warehousing and product support facility in Fort McMurray supports the 17 P&H 4100 class shovels that currently operate in the oil sands region.
