Mining software solutions provider, MICROMINE has stepped up its presence in Latin America with the opening of an office in Mexico. Headquartered in Perth, Australia, the opening of the new MICROMINE office in Fresnillo, Zacatecas brings the total number of outposts to 23 of the software provider renowned for solutions that are relevant to every stage of the mining process – from capturing, managing, visualising and understanding data to controlling and reporting on mine production.

With a 500-year history of exploration and production (dating back to the Aztec empire), Mexico has abundant resources of gold, silver, zinc, lead, copper, coal and iron, making it a prime mining destination. Despite Mexico’s long tradition of mining, just 25% of the country has been explored for minerals and oil to date. Currently, Mexico’s mines produce 1.7% of the world’s output of mineral ores and the country is the largest producer of silver globally. However, it is growing demand for zinc and copper that is boosting Mexico’s mining sector. Significant projects are ramping-up across the copper, precious metals, zinc and lead sectors, as well as highly sought-after lithium. Both junior and senior miners are developing projects in the country, with most juniors in the precious metals sector and larger firms active in copper or base metals. A solid pipeline of projects, competitive operating costs and rising metal prices is seeing mining activity increase.
As mining activity accelerates in the Central American mining hub, demand for MICROMINE’s software has grown too. The Pitram fleet management and mine production solution has been adopted at silver mines, Micromine’s mineral exploration, geological and resource modelling, and mine planning and production solution is being deployed at various projects, while the Geobank data management solution is aiding explorers across Latin America.
Guido Perez, Regional Manager based out of the Denver office heads MICROMINE’s Mexican office and the local team is focussed on supporting growth in software sales, professional services and customer support within the region. “Mining companies in Mexico are seeking to improve their operations and shorten project times. When the Mexican office opened in November, it became MICROMINE’s third office in Latin America – and its first in Central America – joining the Brazilian and Peruvian authorised resellers serving global mining and exploration operations in the region.
