The Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry was established in 2005 to support the sustainable development of the Australian minerals industry, consistent with the Vision of the Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources to 2025, and Enduring Value, the Australian Minerals Industry Framework for Sustainable Development. The program is managed by a Steering Committee chaired by the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (DITR) and including representatives of the Department of the Environment and Heritage, the Australian mining industry, research bodies and the Chairs of the expert Working Groups.
Working Groups of experts, industry, and government representatives have developed a resource booklet for the first four themes of the Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program, including: • Community Engagement and Development; • Mine Rehabilitation; • Mine Closure; and • Stewardship. The above four booklets are available in draft form for stakeholder comment and review on the program’s website – www.industry.gov.au/sdmining from June 23 to July 21. To facilitate the finalisation of the document, forward comments on any of the above four draft documents please to [email protected] by July 21.
