Groundwater modelling with Visual MODFLOW – the next generation

modfl.jpgSchlumberger Water Services has released of Visual MODFLOW® Flex, the next generation of groundwater flow, heat and contaminant transport modeling software for groundwater management. Visual MODFLOW Flex improves modelling efficiency by integrating 3D hydrogeologic conceptual modelling and industry standard numeric engines in a single, easy-to-use software environment. “Visual MODFLOW Flex represents our ongoing commitment to innovation in groundwater modeling technology,” said Ole Christian Meldahl, Software Manager, Schlumberger Water Services.

“With its unique integration of conceptual and numerical modeling, groundwater modelers are now able to build larger and more complex models more efficiently than before. In addition, the ability to easily generate multiple numerical models from a single grid-independent conceptual model gives modelers the freedom to evaluate alternative scenarios, leading to more accurate models and a better understanding of the groundwater system. ”

With Visual MODFLOW Flex, groundwater professionals are now able to:

■Conceptualise the groundwater system, prior to the simulation – The geological formations, property model and boundary conditions are all designed outside the numerical grid; this provides users the flexibility to adjust the interpretation of the groundwater system before applying the numerical grid and converting to a numerical model.
■Build the model with minimal data pre-processing – Users can now maximize the use of existing grid-independent GIS data and incorporate physical geology and geographic conditions before designing the grid.
■Simulate regional and local-scaled models – Support for MODFLOW-LGR allows users to refine the grid around multiple areas of interest for running local scale simulations within a larger regional scale model.
■Build and run larger, more complex models – Users can now leverage the power of 64-bit computers to build larger, more complex models and run simulations significantly faster
■Manage multiple models more efficiently – Within a single project, multiple models can be generated in parallel for making direct comparisons and evaluating alternative hydrogeologic interpretations.
■Compare and evaluate multiple grid types – With a complete selection of finite difference grid types, users have the freedom to choose a grid type that best accommodates the geologic structures for the most reliable and stable simulation.
