Monadelphous Group has been awarded a construction contract valued at some A$75 million at BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Jimblebar mine, east of Newman in Western Australia. The contract involves structural, mechanical and piping works associated with the construction of stacking, reclaiming, train load out, product sampling and water infrastructure facilities.“Monadelphous has a long track record for the safe and reliable delivery of construction services on many of the major iron ore expansion projects in Western Australia,” Monadelphous Managing Director Rob Velletri said. “We are pleased to have been selected as a contractor and we look forward to delivering results at Jimblebar for this valued customer.”

Work on the project is scheduled to commence next month.

Leighton Holdings subsidiary Thiess had already won a A$166 million bulk earthworks and infrastructure contract for the mine. Thiess will provide bulk earthworks, drainage and civil structures, road works and buried services. Work was scheduled to be finished by July 2012.

Just east of Newman, Jimblebar will be one of the drivers of BHP’s plans to up its iron ore output to 220 Mt/y by 2014, with the mine planned to initially add 35 Mt/y to production and eventually ramp up to 55 Mt/y.
