Caterpillar’s new R2900 XE LHD with diesel-electric drivetrain is set to be displayed at MINExpo 2021 – the new model it says features a significant reduction in maintenance and repair costs, while minimising emissions. Its redesigned lift arm offers greater lift height which togther with new components delivers up to a 39% improved lift breakout force over the R2900G, making this model up to 31 t per litre more fuel efficient.

Overall Cat says the machine delivers a 20% increase in productivity over the predecessor machine. The R2900 XE has an 18.5 t payload making it a good match for the 63 t payload AD63 Cat underground truck. It also has a redesigned bucket for faster cycle time. The new diesel-electric hybrid powertrain combines a Cat C15 engine with EU Stage V option with a Cat switched reluctance electric drive system, which has already been applied on surface machines such as the 988K XE wheel loader.

The hybrid nature of the machine also means reduced maintenance and repair time plus longer component life and service intervals, while the frame has been strengthened further for greater durability. A traction control system minimises tyre/wheel spin while it features redesigned axles, wheel and brake groups. Cat says it is also “built for operators” having an ergonomic seat and controls, increased operator space, optimised HVAC system and isolation mounting. High resolution displays give operators real time updates while the machine also has operator assist technology including AutoDig for increased efficiency. Finally it is also autonomous ready for integtation with MineStar Command for underground remote, semi-autonomous and fully autonomous operations.
