During The Electric Mine 2024, held May 21-23 at Crown Perth, Western Australia, we sat down with eight interviewees from Sandvik, ABB, Epiroc, Komatsu, Hitachi Energy, Cavotec and First Mode. The conversations focused on the industry’s route to net zero, plus the challenges and opportunities that come with mine electrification. In this interview, we talked in-depth with Dan Funcannon, Senior Vice President, Electric Drive Trucks, Komatsu. We talked through the new momentum in the industry towards electrification and decarbonisation as interim targets get closer; but also some of the big challenges that remain such as the marrying of automation with zero emissions powertrains; plus achieving parity or better of productivity. Customer partnerships on this electric mine journey are crucial and we also covered initiatives like the GHG Alliance in helping move things forward. Funcannon also updated IM on its progress in getting the first of its power agnostic trucks out to customers for testing. We also discussed the potential for some parts of the world and some customers going the hydrogen fuel cell mining truck route if the infrastructure and supply becomes available while others at the same time pursue battery solutions. Finally, we review how Komatsu is already helping customers reduce emissions today through things like electric shovels, more efficient engines and increased efficiency and talked through other potential decarbonisation contributors like HVO, methanol and hydrogen combustion solutions.
