Cyanco to expand Winnemucca sodium cyanide plant on rising demand

The world’s largest sodium cyanide (NaCN) production facility is expanding further, with Cyanco’s flagship Winnemucca, Nevada, plant set to grow by another 35,000 t/y.

Cyanco’s investment will strengthen its position as a global leader for the supply of this reagent for gold and silver mining around the world, it said.

Headquartered in Pearland, Texas, Cyanco is the largest global producer of sodium cyanide with manufacturing facilities in Nevada and Texas, serving customers in North America, Latin America and Africa. Its Applied Technology division also provides consulting services, laboratory support, and cyanide processing technologies to help customers optimise metal recovery and sodium cyanide usage throughout each mine’s lifecycle.

Cyanco President and CEO Michael Lefenfeld said: “As the NaCN market continues to experience strong growth globally, we are expanding both solid and solution capacity to meet market demand and ensure the continued safe, reliable and high-quality supply of product around the world.”

The new solid NaCN production lines in Winnemucca will provide additional redundancy of supply for the company’s Alvin, Texas, facility, which was built to serve international customers in 2013.

With all necessary permitting and approvals secured, Cyanco is ready to break ground, with mechanical completion of the expansion project expected in the December quarter of 2019 and with facility use ramping up quickly.

Once operational, Cyanco’s full delivery system, including West Coast ocean and NAFTA rail supply chains, will be registered under the International Cyanide Management Code.

Earlier this year, an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management agreed to acquire Cyanco from funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management.
