New Cat 6040 hydraulic shovel receives added engine configuration, new undercarriage

Caterpillar has revamped its 6040 hydraulic mining shovel with an added engine configuration to meet US EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emission standards, new heavy-duty undercarriage, as well as enhanced integration to improve servicing efficiency and parts sourcing.

The new engine configuration includes two Cat C32 engines, offering a total gross power rating of 1,550 kW. The engine package includes maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalysts and does not require diesel exhaust fluid/AdBlue or diesel particulate filters.

The new engine option joins the twin C32 configuration with optimised fuel efficiency settings to meet China Nonroad Stage III emission standards, equivalent to US EPA Tier 2, as well as China Smoke Category III limits. An engine oil extension option, plus new Cat Type 4 filters for both engine configurations, help to further reduce maintenance costs.

Connecting to Cat MineStar™ Solutions’ suite of integrated technology, new Product Link Elite comes standard on the 6040 shovel.

Product Link Elite delivers enhanced communication through a dual data path, allowing data transfer to both the local server and cloud simultaneously. Caterpillar’s next generation of on-board hardware, Product Link Elite features an easily configurable interface and customisable data-push frequency, Cat says. Information transfer from the equipment can be configured via cellular, satellite or mine network connection to meet the mine site’s needs.

The new 6040 shovel delivers increased uptime with its heavy-duty undercarriage, Cat claims. Improved heavy-duty load rollers and idlers now feature duo cone seals, steel-back bronze bearings and fixed axle technology to increase service life and eliminate overheating during travel. Track pad, tensioning and wear updates deliver a higher level of durability and reliability to lower operating costs. Retrofit kits for the heavy-duty rollers are available for field units to improve existing fleet reliability.

Like previous series, the new 6040 shovel can be equipped with backhoe or Cat TriPower™ Face Shovel front end designs. To deliver high machine reliability in harsh mining conditions, the rugged front attachments feature high-strength steel and castings, joined and thermally stressed-relieved, to extend service life and achieve production targets. With its 39.6 t bucket payload, the 6040 shovel offers an optimal four-pass match with the Cat 785 haul truck, five-pass match with Cat 789 and six-pass match with Cat 793 mining trucks, Cat says.

For the first time, the new Cat 6040 hydraulic mining shovel fully integrates the undercarriage, engine module, superstructure main frame, carbody and crawler frames, hydraulic lines and motors, and counterweight into Caterpillar systems to improve servicing efficiency and parts sourcing.

Terex Trucks to launch EU Stage V TA300, TA400 ADTs at Hillhead Digital

Terex Trucks is readying the launch of new EU Stage V versions of its TA300 and TA400 articulated haulers for the fast-approaching Hillhead Digital event.

The machines have been updated with an EU Stage V emission-compliant engine – and now deliver an improvement in fuel efficiency, an even stronger performance, as well as low total cost of ownership, the company says.

Both haulers come with a reduction of up to 7% in fuel consumption when compared with the Stage IV engine, according to Terex Trucks. Customers in Europe will also benefit from the haulers’ strong engine performance and excellent responsive power in all conditions.

Equipped with a Variable Geometry Turbo, the new Stage V engine allows for faster response at all engine speeds and an efficient combustion performance, according to the company. This helps improve operators’ efficiency while keeping the total cost of ownership low.

The TA300 and TA400 Stage V engine’s effective aftertreatment system uses selective catalytic reduction technology, removing the need for exhaust gas recirculation. This way, no exhaust gas is returned to the combustion chamber of the engine, helping to improve efficiency and durability of the machine. The diesel oxidation catalyst and a large-capacity diesel particulate filer ensure the engine meets the latest EU emission standards.

Kenny Price, Regional Sales Manager for EMEA at Terex Trucks, said: “Introducing the Stage V compliant engine for the TA300 and TA400 is part of our focus on delivering efficient, productive, high-quality and durable articulated haulers, while keeping the total cost of ownership down.

“We’re excited about presenting the new Stage V haulers to customers at Hillhead Digital.”

Just like the Terex Trucks Stage IV haulers, the new Stage V TA300 and TA400 are equipped with Scania DC9 and DC13 engines. Thanks to a drivetrain that is matched with the engine, the trucks deliver a powerful performance and excel in demanding work environments. For heightened levels of operational safety and control, an engine exhaust brake is installed as standard, which also reduces brake component wear.

The haulers also come with three-stage aspirated air filtration, which provides increased engine protection to lengthen maintenance intervals. All of this helps deliver strong, durable engine performance and keeps the total cost of ownership low.

The new Stage V TA300 and TA400 engines are also linked to Terex Trucks’ Haul Track telematics system, which allows customers to have visibility and control of the haulers, according to the company. They can access machine GPS location and tracking together with a range of downloadable daily performance reports such as machine hours worked, engine speed, idle time and system fault code alerts. This helps customers to plan maintenance more efficiently, maximises uptime and prolongs component lifecycles.

The first Stage V 28-t-payload TA300 and 38-t-payload TA400 are already rolling off the production line and will be delivered to the first customers in Europe from March, according to Terex Trucks.

Terex Trucks will present its new EU Stage V emission-compliant TA300 and TA400 dump trucks at the Hillhead Digital 2021 exhibition from March 30-31.

New GHH 45 t capacity dump truck about to enter underground market

GHH has developed a new 42 t payload dump truck that, it says, offers maximum drive power, improved turning radius, steep dumping angle and excellent ergonomics and safety.

The German manufacturer of heavy machinery for civil engineering, tunnelling and mining, which has roots that go back to 1758, has three other underground dump trucks in its underground mining portfolio (in addition to two within its low profile dump truck offering and one within its flameproof portfolio) spanning 15-35 t payload applications. The new truck is the largest in its portfolio.

The new MK-42 offers an up to 45 t payload, 19-24 m³ dump body capacity, maximum drive power, a great turning radius, improved dumping angle and excellent ergonomics and safety, according to the company. It has a streamlined, innovative product design, which just received the Red Dot Design Award, GHH added.

The 460 kW Mercedes OM473 forms the engine base, fulfilling the latest EU Stage V emission standards. GHH also offers Tier 3 and 4 versions for less regulated markets, while an alternative Volvo Penta TAD1651 or 1671 engine option is available.

The vehicle rests on Kessler axles with oscillating articulation and front axle suspension, while the power is transmitted by a converter and gearbox combination from the Dana 8000 series.

Designed for use in harsh environments, especially in underground hard-rock mining applications, the MK-42’s dimensions are surprisingly compact at 3,062 x 10,535 x 2,719 mm (WxLxH). A steep dumping angle of 68° leads to high efficiency productivity and improved cycle time, according to GHH.

The company said special emphasis was placed on a safe and simple design, with low maintenance and repair costs, and operator safety and comfort kept in mind through the entire design process. The ROPS/FOPS certified cab is ergonomically designed to be spacious, quiet, pressurised and effectively air-conditioned to ensure maximum operator comfort while minimising fatigue, GHH says. The strategically placed trainer seat, meanwhile, provides for effective operator training.

The new MK-42 fits seamlessly into the manufacturer’s range of dump trucks and is the perfect haulage partner for GHH’s LF-14 loader, with the combination of the two offering three pass loading, GHH said. Extensive consulting, aftermarket support, parts sales and technical training are just a few of the services GHH offers to all customers worldwide.

Global sales will start shortly as the prototype truck enters its final stage of rigorous testing, GHH said, which added that a special version, the MK-A45, will be marketed exclusively for the Russia market.

Boliden Kevitsa takes delivery of first EU-Stage-V-compliant Komatsu haul truck

Boliden has received the first haul trucks from Komatsu as part of its investment in a new truck fleet at its Kevitsa (Finland) and Aitik (Sweden) open-pit base metal operations.

The delivery marks the entry of Komatsu electric dump trucks into the European market, according to the miner.

For Kevitsa, 17 Komatsu 830E-5 haul trucks will be delivered until January of 2020, with nine Komatsu 930E-5 haul trucks being delivered to Aitik until April 2020.

The new trucks are the first EU Stage-V haul trucks within Boliden’s fleet, significantly reducing diesel exhaust emissions, the company said. They will also provide improvements in operator environment and safety, Boliden added.

The Komatsu 830E-5 haul trucks have a 220 t payload and will replace the current truck fleet at Kevitsa, reducing the mine’s production cost, Boliden said. To further increase efficiency and productivity, the trucks will be equipped with dispatch and maintenance systems from Modular Mining to enable optimised production and tracking as well as fleet maintenance support, the company said.

Boliden mentioned the purchase of trucks back in October during its September quarter results, saying it had reached agreement with Komatsu regarding an investment totalling some SEK 900 million ($96 million). At the time, the company said all of the trucks were equipped for future electrification; an important point considering the trolley assist trial ongoing at Aitik.

To mark the delivery milestone of the first truck, a handover ceremony was arranged in Kevitsa on July 10.

During the event, strategies and technical solutions were presented by executives such as Boliden President and CEO, Mikael Staffas, and Managing Director and CEO of Komatsu Europe, Masatoshi Morishita.

Mikael Staffas said: “This is an important step in the development of our open-pit mines while improving our environmental performance from an already strong position. This [is], not least, because we now create opportunities for increased electrification and related productivity development.”

Masatoshi Morishita says: “Today is a milestone for Komatsu Europe. With the delivery of first CE-certified Electric Dump Trucks to Boliden, Komatsu can offer a full line-up of mining products and solutions in Europe as well. We aim this will only be the start.”

Bell ADTs benefitting from EU Stage V MTU Engines from Rolls-Royce

Bell Equipment, the articulated dump truck (ADT) specialist, recently received the first six Series 1000 – 1500 MTU engines from Rolls-Royce that meet the new EU Stage V emission standard, the engine specialist said.

The engines cover a power range from 170-430 kW.

The order had been preceded by a test phase of several years under the most adverse operating conditions in order to ensure the trucks would be guaranteed a reliable, cost-effective upgrade, according to Rolls-Royce. To this end, MTU’s off-road engine series were optimised to comply with the emission standard and a new exhaust aftertreatment system introduced.

In preparation for the more stringent emission requirements, Rolls-Royce had made two Stage V prototypes available to Bell for field trials in 2016 – a 260 kW MTU 6R 1000 engine and a 430 kW 6R 1500 were successfully tested in the hot, dusty climate of South Africa and for the tough conditions encountered at extreme altitudes of up to 3,000 m.

Bell and Rolls-Royce with the MTU brand have been working together closely since the 1990s, with Rolls-Royce not only the supplier of more than 1,000 MTU engines a year, but also the technology partner in all emission-related design and construction decisions – including the upgrading of the ADTs.

Stefan Rudert, Head of Sales and Application Engineering for Construction & Agriculture at MTU, said: “During the field trials, we accumulated an enormous amount of experience that goes way beyond any simulation on a test bench, since the real-life interplay between the engine and the vehicle affects the behaviour. Data obtained during the field tests, which we collected from sensors mounted on the engines was subsequently used in the configuration of the components.”

The new Stage V engines, which Bell will successively upgrade to, besides MTU’s current SCR exhaust technology, also include a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF), with all components installed in a compact one-box solution behind the driver’s cab, according to the company.

“Another positive aspect of the new emissions technology is that it reduces fuel consumption,” the company said. “To prepare for the upgrade to the new emission regulation, Rolls-Royce had around 100 MTU engines undergoing trials with various vehicle manufacturers.

“In total, over 110,000 operating hours were accumulated as a result, with individual engines running non-stop for more than 4,000 hours. Since the trials had started at an early stage, the MTU engines were certified in accordance with the EU Stage V regulations by mid-2018, marketable and ready for series production.”
