Metso Sorocaba foundry and rubber factory achieves carbon-neutral status

Metso says its Sorocaba foundry and rubber factory in Brazil has received carbon-neutral certification in line with PAS 2060:2014 standard from an independent third-party, BSI.

The supply chain operations are pivotal to Metso’s overall CO2 footprint, with the Sorocaba foundry and rubber factories accounting for around 20% of Metso’s own operation’s CO2 emissions, according to the OEM.

Heikki Metsälä, President, Consumables Business Area, said: “Metso aims to achieve net zero by 2030 in its own operations, and the certification now obtained is a step towards the set goal. Carbon neutrality is more difficult to achieve in highly energy-intensive foundry operations and our customers increasingly seek evidence of our emissions reductions to help them meet their own ambitious climate objectives. The Carbon Neutral verification aids our customers in reducing their supply chain emissions.

“We want to be a sustainable partner for our customers and the certificate is a great example of making tangible actions.”

The most significant initiative towards acquiring the certificate was implemented during the March quarter of 2023 when the Sorocaba foundry and rubber factory partnered with a local supplier for biomethane sourced Gas Renewable Energy Certificates (GAS-RECs) enabling the units to zero its remaining CO2 emissions from 2023. In addition, other environmental initiatives following plans towards net zero were implemented.

The improvement actions in Sorocaba, one of Metso’s biggest production hubs, will continue on many fronts including investment to replace the existing gas boiler with an electric one in its rubber factory and a joint effort between screening manufacturing, foundry and rubber factory to increase own renewable energy production, Metso says.

Marcelo Motti, Vice President, Sales and Service, Brazil, Metso, said: “This certification is the latest of our efforts to support our customers in their sustainable mining ambitions in South America. This year we have also opened a new logistics and distribution centre as well as introduced a unique circularity solution for mill liner recycling in Chile.”

Metso’s Sorocaba manufacturing operations include a foundry and a rubber factory that are now certified, as well screening equipment manufacturing, pumps manufacturing and a service hub. Today, Metso has approx. 1,700 employees working in production, sales, and field service in Brazil.

Metso’s Trelleborg facility to press ahead with mill lining additions

Metso says it is expanding the range, sizes and types of consumable products it manufactures with the help of an “innovative, mega-size compress press”.

The move will develop its consumables product range and production capacity, especially in larger consumables wear sizes, it said.

The press, being installed at its Trelleborg factory in Sweden, can produce products, such as mill lining wear parts, that weigh up to 8 t. Production with the new press will start in May, it said.

The press to be installed is the first in a series of three similar machines with a total value of €10 million ($10.8 million), according to Metso.

Sami Takaluoma, President, Consumables business, Metso, said: “We are continuously developing our operations to improve our flexibility in fulfilling our mining customers’ needs globally.

“For our customers, the ability to acquire and use larger, high-quality consumables in the process enables a longer operating time and reduces the time required for maintenance work. The new press has been developed together with the supplier, and it utilises unique, innovative technology.”

The ongoing COVID-19-related travel restrictions and increased employee safety measures globally created a need to find a sustainable and safe way to install the new machine in the Trelleborg facility, Metso said.

The installation process is monitored remotely by the supplier with dedicated installation support hubs in Australia and China. Through a variety of headsets and video cameras, the installation team has been able to obtain continuous online guidance and instructions.

“In this challenging situation, we found a workable solution to stay on schedule,” Takaluoma said. “Thanks to the continuous support and detailed online guidance provided to the on-site team, the installation work has proceeded as planned and with safety measures maintained.”

Metso is a leading provider of rubber and poly-met mill linings and has a strong service network in all the main mining markets. The Trelleborg unit produces rubber and poly-met wear parts used in the mining industry.

Metso currently operates 11 factories manufacturing synthetic solutions globally, and it will open a new factory for mining consumables wear parts in Lithuania in 2020.

Adelaide Brighton cements contract extension with OZ Minerals at Prominent Hill

ASX-listed Adelaide Brighton has announced the signing of a contract with OZ Minerals for the continuation of cement supply to the Prominent Hill copper-gold operation in South Australia.

The contract period is for a five-year term with options to extend, Adelaide Brighton said.

In addition to the supply of cement, Adelaide Brighton will also supply aggregate and sand from the company’s Sellicks Hill Quarry and Price sand operation as well as auxiliary logistics services, it said.

Adelaide Brighton CEO, Nick Miller, said: “The contract, which now also includes aggregate and sand supply for the Prominent Hill operation, reflects the company’s competitive offering of a broad range of products in the South Australian market.”

Prominent Hill is a copper-gold mining operation in northern South Australia, which is made up of the Malu open-pit mine – which concluded operations last year – the Ankata and Malu underground deposits and a conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processing plant.
