New Century Resources and Senex Energy agree on natural gas supply pact

Senex Energy Ltd has announced a sales agreement involving around 7 PJ of natural gas over three years with New Century Resources Ltd.

New Century, which owns and operates the Century zinc mine in Queensland, Australia, will receive this natural gas supply from the Diamantina Power Station in Mount Isa (owned and operated by APA Group), with the 7 PJ being enough to operate the mine, it said.

Under the three-year agreement starting January 1, 2022, Senex will provide around 7 PJ of natural gas to support New Century’s processing operations at a fixed price, in line with current market levels. Senex will further supply around 1 PJ of additional natural gas at New Century’s election by mid-2022 in support of material increases in production levels associated with the potential development of existing in-situ deposits at Century.

Senex Managing Director and CEO, Ian Davies, said: “Century Mine generates significant state royalties and export earnings and is a critical project in the Queensland Government’s Strategic Blueprint for the North West Minerals Province.

“Senex also acknowledges APA as an important part of the value chain delivering energy to Mount Isa.”

Centurion to help with logistics load at Century zinc operations

Centurion says it has been awarded a multi-year contract by Century Mining Ltd (CML) to provide logistics support, servicing the Century zinc mine and Karumba Port facilities in north Queensland, Australia.

The services to be provided will include customs clearance, wharf collections of import commodities, warehousing, road transport, air freight, and courier services.

Centurion will use a national road network to consolidate freight in north Queensland (including through Centurion’s Townsville branch), complemented by dedicated daily services to the Century Mine and Karumba Port, it said. A dedicated road train fleet will be engaged with a mix of trailing equipment to cater for the safe and efficient transportation of bulk reagents, general freight and grinding media, all of which is required for the daily operations of the mine and port facility.

CML, a wholly-owned subsidiary of New Century Resources, operates the Century Mine, extracting zinc concentrate, and Karumba Port facility to undertake export transfer of bulk concentrate to key customers globally.

Centurion CEO, Justin Cardaci, said: “We are excited to support CML on a national scale. Centurion’s end-to-end logistics solutions, proprietary tracking systems, and nationwide branch network enable us to tailor and adapt to CML’s specific requirements and provide visibility through out every step of the service.”

Centurion will commence operations around February 2021.

Mining restarts at Century zinc operation in Queensland, Australia

New Century Resources has started hydraulic mining at the Century zinc operation in Queensland, Australia, almost three years since its previous owner downed tools at the open pit.

The commencement of operations comes both on time and on budget, according to New Century. The company’s Restart Feasibility Study estimated a project able to produce 264,000t/y of zinc and 3 Moz/y of silver for a start-up cost of A$50 million ($36 million).

This is quite a turnaround for a mine that was thought extinct when MMG stopped processing ore back in early 2016.

The original Century mine started up in 1999 and produced and processed an average of 475,00 t/y of zinc concentrate and 50,000 t/y of lead concentrate over 16 years. This saw the product transferred in slurry form via a 304 km underground pipeline to Century’s port facility at Karumba.

New Century’s restart plan leverages much of the existing infrastructure at the operation, but initially involves reprocessing the mine’s old tailings for the first six-and-a-bit years.

Managing Director Patrick Walta said: “It is a fantastic achievement by the New Century team and our business partners to deliver the restart of operations at Century both on time and budget.

“We are now focused on the next phase of Century development, ramping up operations to become one of the world’s top zinc producers.”

Back in May, Downer EDI Ltd and its joint venture partner Waanyi, were awarded a life of mine contract by New Century Resources to provide mining services at the operation.
