At Anglo American’s Los Bronces copper mine in Chile, two Komatsu 930E-3 mining trucks that were due to be decommissioned were recently converted into 70,000 gallon (265,000 litre) water sprinkler trucks, which Komatsu Chile says were the first of their kind in Chile and worldwide.
The joint development between Komatsu and Anglo American made it possible to repurpose the existing assets, extending their useful life; increase haul road water irrigation capacity and improve overall operational efficiency and continuity. These new water trucks tripled the capacity of traditional units allowing irrigation autonomy of up to one hour, thereby supporting the customer’s mining expansion process.
The milestone was possible thanks to collaborative work led by the consumables management under the mining spare parts directorate – together with different areas of the company plus strategic supplier and water truck specialist Mega Corp – with zero accidents throughout the process. The trucks were each fitted with a Mega MTT70 water tank.
“This milestone reflects our ability as Komatsu to act as a strategic partner, integrating technical, operational, and safety solutions, and demonstrates that when we work together with the customer, we can develop innovative solutions that mark a turning point in the industry,” said Álvaro Pantoja Deputy Manager of Commercial Services at Komatsu Chile.
“This addition strengthens pollution control, safeguarding the safety and health of our people, and at the same time allows us to extend the useful life of our assets, maximising capital efficiency,” said Mauricio Fenieux, Maintenance Superintendent – Transportation & Service at Anglo American Los Bronces.
“This achievement is the result of perseverance and teamwork, which, together with the client and our support teams, allowed us to successfully complete this project,” said Roberto Valera, Product Manager Undercarriage & Mega Water System at Komatsu Chile.
Mega manufactures a complete line of water tanks for Komatsu rigid and articulated off-highway prime movers. In January 2026, Mega Corp was acquired by Ground Force Worldwide, a Federal Signal company, bringing Mega, Ground Force and TowHaul together in one company.
