Milestone Austin 797 haul truck body set for Canada oil sands sector

Only 16 days after opening its newest manufacturing facility in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, Austin Engineering says it has completed the construction of an inaugural massive haul truck body for a client in the region’s oil sands sector.

The Austin designed, built and supported body is a heated 797 model that weighs 48 t and has a payload capacity of circa-370 t.

These Austin truck bodies operate in minus 40°C temperatures for several months of the year, according to the company, with the large red load arrow (pictured) enabling sight of loading in regular blizzard conditions.

Austin says its Fort McMurray facility has more contracted 797 bodies to complete throughout December and beyond.

Back in August, Austin announced it was expanding its North American operations into Canada, signing a 10-year lease on a site with 23,000 sq.ft (2,137 sq.m) of manufacturing facilities in Fort McMurray.

MinRes and Metso working on 15 Mt portable crushing plant

Mineral Resources Ltd told investors at its annual general meeting last week that it had designed a 15 Mt capacity portable crushing plant and planned to develop it in joint venture with Metso.

The “Next Gen” crushing and screening plant is expected to come with low capital and operating costs, in addition to significant flexibility with its portability.

The ASX-listed mining services company said it planned to install its first unit on site in the June quarter of 2020 and that it should take eight weeks to mobilise and commission at site.

The JV with Metso is expected to see both companies develop and market the plant.

In addition to the crushing and screening plant, MinRes said it had developed a carbon fibre manufacturing facility producing “structural members” and that four 150 t dump truck trays had been made, with field testing currently taking place on site.

The company, which says these trays will increase dump truck payloads by 10-15%, is expected to carry out durability trials to understand wear rates, ongoing optimisation of both tray and workshop and commence manufacturing of 200 t dump truck trays in the next 12 months.

CQMS Razer bolsters North and South America mining business

CQMS Razer has agreed to acquire California-based Berkeley Forge & Tool’s (BFT) mining products and associated IP, including patents, new product development pipeline, branding, and trademarks.

The Australia and US-headquartered technology and engineering company, owned by American Industrial Partners, said the acquisition was a strategic move to continue expansion of its global market presence. It will also complement its existing mining product range, it said.

CQMS Razer CEO, John Barbagallo, said the combined business would enhance capabilities to effectively supply and support the global mining sector, especially in the North and South American markets where BFT has been providing the industry with products for more than 50 years.

He added: “Together, we will broaden our product offering, increase our technology and solutions footprint, and enhance our supply chain capability.”

Based in Berkeley, BFT has been supplying mining equipment components into North and South America since the 1960s. This includes forged ground engaging tools.
